sunflowergirlWhat is a Mentally Healthy Person?

We all recognize it when we see it: One who is clear-thinking, sane, in reality, objective, ordered, responsive, balanced and not given to extremes . . . free from bitterness, unresolved conflicts, lingering fears, anger, hate, worries, hurts . . . well adjusted . . . one who has a sense of being in control of one's life . . . and is able to bond well emotionally with others.

One who is mentally healthy will be able to deal with the challenges of life (otherwise defined as "empowered"), will have good judgment, be resilient in the face of change or setbacks, will be solution-focused . . . have a realistic internal belief system . . . sense of peace and well-being . . . fit for functioning well in the real world.

teadressupWhat is Positive Mental Health?

An attitude and orientation of being mentally healthy and being positive, energetic, vibrant, full of fun and joy . . . saying - Yes! - to life . . . choosing to believe for and bring about the best in every situation . . . choosing to look at the bright side . . . very appealing to be around, attracting and producing more positive people and situations.

What is The Approach?

With 35+ years of experience in individual and relationship therapy I have found a solution-focused, goal-oriented approach with an emphasis on positive psychology*, brings the results my clients seek. I endeavor to create an atmosphere in which healing and growth can occur for the individual and/or relationship as we progress together toward the client's stated goals.

I focus on getting to the root of the problem, and then move into empowering the client to get to a more positive place.

*Positive psychology is the study of maximizing optimal human functioning . . . an emphasis on mental health instead of mental illness.

Drawing from many great resources and over 35 years of successful experience, I have compiled a practical workbook, Positive Relationship Counseling, with sections including:

  • Creating an inspiring vision for your relationship
  • Constructive communication skills
  • Win-win conflict resolution
  • Expectations and needs
  • Creating a safe place where emotional and sexual intimacy can thrive
  • Affair proofing your marriage
  • And many more tools for building a positive, enjoyable atmosphere in which a satisfying and meaningful relationship can grow and flourish.

Clients may choose from:

  1. Brief solution focused therapy, or
  2. Comprehensive and thorough relationship counseling.

Personally, I believe the therapist needs to be the healthiest model possible for her clients and I am always working on my own growth goals. Part of my own therapy incorporates reflection, solitude. being calm and remaining centered.  One approach that often helps me do so is visiting parks to refresh and reflect.
